Local Community Engagement in Action at the Chafariz da Fonte dos Leões in Cuba

On Friday, 17 April 2026, the SPICE project officially launched its activities in Cuba, Portugal, with the first public co-creation session taking place at the Casa Fialho de Almeida Literary Museum. Organised by Make it Better and Município de Cuba, the event marked an important first step in a collaborative journey that places local communities at the heart of sustainable urban transformation.

The session brought together residents, local organisations, municipal representatives, and project partners in an open and participatory dialogue focused on the revitalisation of the public space surrounding the iconic Fonte dos Leões fountain and the historic public tanks. More than an introductory meeting, the event created a space for listening, exchanging ideas, and collectively imagining new possibilities for one of the municipality’s most meaningful public areas.

Through discussion and active participation, attendees explored how public spaces can become more inclusive, accessible, sustainable, and reflective of local identity. Participants shared memories, concerns, aspirations, and ideas for how the space around Fonte dos Leões can evolve into a vibrant and welcoming meeting point for the community.

This is only the beginning of the SPICE journey in Cuba. Over the coming months, the project will continue to engage citizens and stakeholders through participatory activities and co-creation workshops designed to transform ideas into concrete and lasting impact.
